Course Description

This course explains the place and behavior of people in society. The scope of study extends from concerns of the family to problems of mass society. Topics of discussion and analysis include culture, status, roles, norms, birth order, deviance, social institutions, social structure, and social problems. Students participate in a variety of individual and group projects that examine how groups operate and the conflicts that affect society. Speakers from the community and field trips illustrate practical applications of the sociological principles studied in class.

    1. Global emotions are common emotions felt by everyone regardless of the culture and society in which that person exists. Anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise are the six identified global emotions identified by anthropologist Paul Ekman.
    2. A social mirror is basically how we view ourselves in respect to how society views us. Our self-opinion is developed through this social mirror that shows us how we should act and behave.
    3. Gender roles are the roles taken by genders as designated by society. Each gender has entirely different roles, or guidlines dictating how they should act and what is appropriate for that gender.

    1. Global emotions are emotions that people expressed during their everyday life. Depending on how they’re feeling at that particular moment. Paul Ekman identified six of them and they are anger, disgust, fear, happiness sadness, and surprise.

    2. A social mirror is what people see others do and they want to do also. It’s basically following the crowd and not being an individual.

    3. Gender roles are roles play by each person were either you’re a girl or a boy. A girl will get girl things and use them .As a boy would do the same. Sometimes society does this and expects everyone to follow this norm boys with boys stuff and girls with girls stuff.

    • Social Mirror was a Theory meant that, there cannot be mirrors in the mind without mirrors in society. For example, Self-Awareness is controlled by social mirrors and also by your experiences.

    A Social mirror is what you think people think of you. It is driven by your fellow peers, and it shapes how you see yourself. If others see you negatively, you see yourself negatively, etc.

    Gender roles are the specific set of roles, regarded as norms, which are assigned to people of a specific gender. These roles vary from culture to culture, so much that what may be a norm in one culture can be considered taboo in another.
